just so you can get a little edu-ma-cation...

After my gripe about Che not being released to theaters, a somewhat silver lining was shone my way via a blog comment. After I read the comment, I typed my way over to everyone's favorite Boob Tube, YouTube, and now I have the biggest smile on my face!

I have here two clips: one's a preview of a straight to DVD (that's already been released, according to the description) film about the life of General George Jackson, a member of the Black Panther Party (the ORIGINAL, not the "new"). He gained national attention as a Soledad Brother, and both his books, written while in prison, reached bestsellers lists. Gary Dourdan stars as Jackson, and from what I see in the preview he actually does the portrayal some justice. I was actually able to find this movie on amazon.com at a reasonable price.

The second clip is a preview of Assata aka Joanne Chesimard, an independent film about the life of Assata Shakur, who is still alive and living in exile in Cuba. I could go on about how she should have been back in the states by now, but I'll digress. Huge plus(es)? The music is scored by Roy Hargrove. Another Panther, Kathleen Cleaver makes and appearance, and Assata makes an appearance as well. No word on when or if this movie has been released, but you can contact the film maker, Fred Baker, at his website if you have any questions.

Still a little salty that films like these aren't in theaters, but with sites like Youtube, I guess history can be delivered another way. Maybe even a better way.
Special thanks to my new reader/blog friend, Mister Jaycee, for giving me these awesome finds. His blog is excellent, so click his name to check him out. I mean, hey, I'm a follower too!

damn, it feels good.

obama teaching Pictures, Images and Photos
Just think...there was a time when "white house" and "black president" put together in a sentence was downright oxymoronic. But now, hopefully we can all breathe easier knowing that after yesterday, Barack Hussein Obama is officially the 44th President of the United States. There's little controversy surrounding if he's literally the first or not (John Hanson ring a bell? Of course it won't, he's not in the books), but I'll be fair and say that right now it shouldn't even matter at this point, because this one is IN THE BOOKS.

Now, although I'm 30 minutes away from D.C., I preferred to be at home watching history from tv via CNN. Other than the Inauguration itself (I cried enough for everyone on my block), there were definitely some highlights, but here were some things I enjoyed:

-Rev. Joseph Lowery's Inaugural Benediction: classic. He even got his rhyme on toward the end. "The brown can stick around, and the yellow can be mellow..." Who's mad at that?
-Those "Hippies for Obama" buttons. I neeeeeed one!
-Something I did at home: Yelling "Get the fu*k out!" when certain (coughBushcough) people were shown leaving the White House. Glad to see you go, really.
-Spike Lee's fitted: "The NY with the joint!" Spotted him wearing this joint on Good Morning America. It was the topic of discussion for a good 3 minutes before Spike changed the subject.

Definitely a day to remember. We've come a long way, but now it's time for the turnaround. FYI: just because we've accomplished something great does NOT give you the excuse to slack up! This is all the more reason to work harder than before. Personally, I think that as soon as Obama was announced the President Elect, some things should have happened in the atmosphere. It's ridiculous that with this historic change going down, the murder rates in inner cities are slowly skyrocketing. Put the guns down and hug someone. The President looks like YOU!

Peep this, though: Not only do we have a black Pres...he's an African Pres.
I smell revolution...

And so it begins: Poem 1/30

I've decided to jump right in and start this 30/30. I wanted to further challenge my intellect by restricting myself to a theme (maybe?), but I think I'll just freewrite and up the ante on my next go round. Yes, I plan on doing this again. Talk about mental calisthenics?! If you're one of those people that gets told to "write it down" a lot, you should definitely try this out. It doesn't necessarily have to be poetry; are the rules really set in stone? Are there rules at all?
I've procrastinated enough. Here we go...

Who Will Tell Them?

that long before they were a thought in mommy and daddy's eyes
we made the Earth spin with a snap of our fingers
spun the stars from our black hands into a black sky
we are He who created above and below
we are the In Between
who will tell them
that we mastered the sciences
built pyramids from sand
the secrets of mathematics ingrained in our lands
all fell at our feet to learn what we know
multi dimensional spiritual beings with no limit to our growth
who will tell them
the black man to run the white house is only one small piece of our puzzle
one minute result of the constant struggle
surviving bondage like no other people
great leaders shot down because they preached we're all equal
who will tell them
that the whole world fears us
taking ownership of what we taught them
erased from all history books; even our potential is too powerful
mind is the rarest of gems
producing thoughts and ideas more precious than time itself
who will tell them we've been bred to be afraid of ourselves
the three fifths mentality ringing louder than freedom's bell
turned us into a word to bring us down
but your mind is too sharp; watch you turn it around
who will tell them their education is doomed for a reason
facts hidden because tapping into yourself is taboo; forbidden
tell them they have to find it on their on, awaken the warrior inside that's been sleeping too long
who will tell him that he does not have to be another statistic
that there really are more of you in college than there are in prison
tell him that he is the 2nd time Jesus has Risen
tell him men who looked like him once ran empires
mental will always grow too strong, so just for him they build jails
they don't have to be sport figures or rappers, fashion designers or actors
possibilities are endless because we birthed them
tell him his blood is of the first biologist and heart surgeon
who will tell her
that "video ho" is not her predestined titled
that what's in her will someday make her someone's idol
tell her that she is designed after Mother Earth
nurturing the world before her own birth
tell her that the tv is not a mirror
she is the creation that spawned beauty itself
but media butchers her image, take advantage of her wealth
tell her that her body is built as is for a reason
that behind her eyes lies the ability to change the very seasons
tell them
they are not only descendants but the infinite coming of greatness
it is more than our style that gives people reason to hate us
that there is no logic or honor in holding their heads down
God spoke you here, and on your head He placed a crown
tell them when they are called other than the name they were given
that person is hurting the very world that they live in
thell them they shouldnt be afraid to let anyone know who they are
their ancestor's determination brought them this far
tell them that even their pigment is a wonder
the thing that divides us all, is what also brings us back to one
black and brown skin mimicking our close relationship with the Sun
tell them not to retaliate with more hate
there's no need to bother
for them hating us is like a child hating his Father
tell them that they are Shaka, Tut, Nefitiri, Martin, Malcolm, Angela, Angelou, Biko, Selassia, Kuti, Garvey, Makeba, Huey, Cleaver, Hughes, Assata, Giovanni, Pryor, Mac, Hayes, Obama, Mother Moore, Cosby, Cochran, Ashe, Robinson, Davis, Jr., Poitier, Pittman, Parks, Till, Evers...
their history goes deeper than that of the deepest wells
tell them.
but first, we must once again tell ourselves.

Yes, WE DID.

"I feel like...I can put my suitcase down, finally."
-Whoopi Goldberg

We are all truly blessed to be alive and experience history. I've been crying since last night, celebrating this awesome moment with my family. WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!It's still hard to believe, but it's been done. Obama had everything thrown at him but the kitchen sink; Jeremiah Wright controversy, false accusations on his religious and political ties; things that should have ended his campaign before it started, honestly. But those who carry faith as I do knew that the election was over before it started. The entire world is still celebrating, and even that speaks volumes to what this black man is about to do for this country. I'm especially excited for my generation's power throughout this election. Thanks to all the young people who voted to make this happen. We are showing the world that we have a voice. It makes me happy to know that right now, my ancestors are smiling at all of us who made this change happen right now. MLK, Malcolm X...I don't have to name them all, because we know. They died for us to exercise the right that we used yesterday. They're finally happy for us. Ashe, and Amen.

The tears I cried last night, and even today, have not all been for me or Obama. I have members of my family who never thought they would be alive to witness something of this magnitude. My grandparents grew up in a heavily segregated south; experiencing Jim Crow and racism in its prime, at my age! Even my father, at 57 years old, remembers having to walk with his mother to the backs of restaurants in the kitchen area to pick up their dinner. As I think about Obama's future inauguration taking place on the steps of a place built by our enslaved forefathers, tears form in my eyes once again. This is simply overwhelming.

Now, the real work begins. As a people, we have shown not only this country, but the world, that we are still the backbone of these United States. There is no longer a reason to complain; the only thing that holds us back is ourselves. Of course everything is not going to change overnight, and threatening issues that plagued our people will still continue, if not, stronger than before; but last night we proved officially that we can do ANYTHING. We should all strive to do our best to make ourselves stronger. We've put him in the White House, now let's show the world exactly why we have all deserved the right to celebrate. It'll be a lot of work, but seriously, it's all worth it.

That means: party on, everyone!

A smile comes to my face as I realize my little brothers (blood and spiritual) don't have to aspire to be just big name sports figures or music "moguls". They can run this country, too.

I'm also extra excited for myself because despite that wack ass flu I had, I still managed to get out of my bed at 6AM to vote! The whole family went, minus my pops (he worked in the am); but plus Scuba Steve. LOL, he had to wait in the other line, on the other side of the polling place...seperate precinct from us. Awww.
Did I take pictures?
Of course, I did.
